PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS - Symptoms, Causes & Joint Care:

What Is Psoriatic Arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a long-term inflammatory condition where the immune system attacks not only the skin but also the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and progressive damage if untreated. It affects people with psoriasis, but joint symptoms can also appear before skin symptoms in some cases.

PsA is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly inflames tissues that are perfectly
healthy. Early diagnosis and continuous care are essential to protect joint function and maintain
mobility.

What Causes Psoriatic Arthritis?

1. Immune System:
The immune system targets the joints, tendons, and ligaments, resulting in swelling, pain, and stiffness.
People with a family history of psoriasis or arthritis have a higher risk.
  • Physical or emotional stress.
  • Infections.
  • Joint injuries.
  • Smoking.
  • Obesity.
  • Hormonal changes.

The inflammation that fuels psoriasis can spread over into the joints, due to inflammation.

Symptoms:

  • Joint pain and stiffness (especially in the mornings).
  • Swollen, tender joints.
  • Warmth around affected joints. Finger or toe swelling (“sausage-like” appearance).
  • Lower back or heel pain.
  • Nail pitting, ridging, or discoloration. Fatigue and decreased energy.
  • Reduced range of motion.
Symptoms can affect one joint or many, sometimes fluctuating in intensity

Types Of Joint Involvement:

Psoriatic arthritis can appear in different patterns:

  • Asymmetric oligoarthritis – a few joints affected unevenly.
  • Symmetric polyarthritis – similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
  • DIP involvement – joints near fingernails.
  • Spondylitic PsA – spine and sacroiliac joint involvement.
  • Arthritis mutilans – rare and severe type.
  • Early care helps prevent progression.

Complications:

  • Chronic pain and stiffness
  • Reduced mobility.
  • Difficulty using hands or walking.
  • A combination of lifestyle correction, holistic therapies, and stress reduction can significantly improve joint comfort and flexibility.

How Ayurveda Helps:

Ayurveda interprets psoriatic arthritis as a deep-rooted imbalance involving Vata, Pitta, and impaired Agni (metabolic fire), leading to toxin accumulation and inflammation in the joints. Ayurvedic management helps in supporting:
  • Joint lubrication and mobility.
  • Reduction of stiffness and discomfort.
  • Detoxification of inflammatory waste.
  • Strengthening of digestion and metabolism.
  • Correction of long-standing lifestyle triggers.
  • Stress reduction
Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapies, herbal formulations, and diet-lifestyle protocols are often used as part of a
customized plan to support both skin and joint health naturally.
