PSORIASIS IN AYURVEDA: Kitibha Kushta Explained With Causes, Symptoms & Holistic

Discover how Ayurveda understands and treats psoriasis (Kitibha Kushta) : causes, pathogenesis, symptoms, holistic protocol, and why our Ayurvedic centre can offer real hope.

WHAT IS KITIBHA KUSHTA

In Ayurveda, skin disorders are broadly grouped under the term Kushta, which is divided into two main categories: Mahakushta (major skin diseases) and Kshudra Kushta (minor or less-severe skin disorders).

Kitibha Kushta is listed in the classical texts as one of the Kshudra Kushtas.

The word “Kitibha” is associated with skin lesions that are blackish-brown in colour, rough to touch, dry and hard, and often pruritic (itchy). In Ayurvedic classical description: “Shyavam kina khara sparsham parusham kitibham matam”.

Ayurveda explains the involvement of blood/tissue channels (Rakta, Mamsa) and dosha imbalances (Vata-Kapha) in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

NIDANA (CAUSATIVE FACTORS):

1. Regular consumption of heavy, oily, processed or late-night meals, leads to Mandāgni (weak digestion) resulting in Ama formation.

2. Frequent intake of incompatible food combinations (for example, milk + fish, or heavy dessert after heavy meal).

3. Excessive physical activity without rest, or working under extreme conditions (heat, cold, humidity) inturn disturbs bodily equilibrium.

4. Frequent stress, disturbed sleep, suppressed natural urges (e.g. delayed urination/defecation) affects Vata and circulatory channels.

5. Cold/damp exposure, inadequate skincare, repeated skin trauma or friction (which are triggers for psoriasis) act as nidāna (causes) in the system.

6. A lifestyle lacking rhythm (irregular meals, erratic sleep-wake cycle, minimal exercise) creating susceptibility to chronic skin-issues.

SAMPRĀPTI (PATHOGENESIS):

Understanding the disease process (Samprāpti) helps patients realise why psoriasis keeps returning and why superficial treatment often fails. In Ayurveda:1. Dosha accumulation: Vata & Kapha (and sometimes Pitta) accumulate due to wrong diet, lifestyle and digestion.

2. Dushya involvement: The affected tissues include Twak (skin), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Lasika (lymph) and Ambu (fluids).

3. Srotas obstruction: Channels such as Raktavāha srotas (blood channels) and Twak srotas (skin channels) become blocked or deranged, stopping proper nourishment and detoxification of skin.

4. Manifestation on skin surface: The vitiated doshas and toxins reach the skin, causing rough, scaly, dark or silvery patches, dryness, itching, cracking and chronicity.

5. Chronicity & recurrence: Unless the underlying imbalance is corrected and channels opened (through Shodhana etc.), the condition tends to relapse. For those living with psoriasis, this understanding offers a new perspective that your skin is signalling deeper imbalances.

RŪPA (SYMPTOMS):

Here are the classical Ayurvedic descriptions of Kitibha Kushta:

Shyava (blackish-blue/grey/ash coloured patches)

Kina-khara sparsha (feel of rough wound-scar to touch)

Parushatvam (hardness, roughness)

Rukshatvam (dryness) Dry, cracked skin, scaling, loss of sheen

Kandu (itching) Itch/burning.

CHIKITSĀ (TREATMENT) – HOLISTIC AYURVEDIC PROTOCOL:

Our hospital offers a comprehensive, personalised Ayurvedic pathway, one that moves from deep cleansing to stabilisation, and ultimately to prevention of recurrence. Here’s how the protocol is typically structured:

1. Shodhana (Purification Therapies) :

When skin disease is extensive or deep-seated, Ayurveda emphasises purification as the foundation for lasting relief.

Key procedures:

Vamana (therapeutic emesis) to eliminate Kapha accumulation.Virechana (therapeutic purgation) to cleanse Pitta-Kapha and restore Agni.

Basti (medicated enema) especially for Vata dominant cases and deeper tissue involvement.

Rakta Mokshana (therapeutic blood-letting/purification) in selected Rakta-vitiated cases (under

specialised supervision).

At our hospital, patients start with a complete assessment of dosha dominance, skin-channel

involvement and tissue-health, then follow a carefully supervised Shodhana protocol tailored to their

constitution and disease stage.

2. Shamana (Pacification and Maintenance Therapies):

After purification, the goal shifts to stabilising the system, calming dosha restlessness, and regenerating healthy tissues:

Internal herbal support & rasayana strengthening.

External therapies – medicated pastes, oils, gentle local treatments to soothe plaques.

Topical care that aligns with Ayurvedic principles of skin nourishment and dosha pacification.

This two-stage approach helps reduce flare-frequency, improve skin texture and build resistance to

triggers.

3. Ahāra & Vihāra (Diet & Lifestyle):

True change is sustained when diet, lifestyle and mental-wellbeing align with your skin-care goals. At our hospital, we guide patients with a bespoke lifestyle plan :

Wholesome diet (Pathya): warm, freshly cooked meals, easy-to-digest foods, light proteins, plenty of

fresh vegetables and moderate spice that supports digestion.

Avoidance diet (Apathya): heavy, oily, processed foods, frequent fried items, cold/raw heavy meals,

incompatible food combinations, excessive sweets and dairy in susceptible individuals.

Lifestyle habits: regular sleep-wake cycle, daily moderate exercise (yoga, brisk walking), skin-friendly

clothing (breathable fabrics), stress-management, avoiding skin trauma or friction.

Mind-Skin link: Essential to address emotional stress, which aggravates doshas and skin channels.

Our hospital’s integrated patient care can include mindfulness, counselling and supportive community.
